Questions people ask

How many nursing homes are in Brooklyn?

CMS's nursing home file lists 40 nursing homes in Kings County (Brooklyn) with 10,471 federally certified beds between them (our sum of CMS's bed counts). CMS describes the file as “General information on currently active nursing homes, including number of certified beds, quality measure scores, staffing and other information used in the Five-Star Rating System.” (CMS Provider Data Catalog) See all 40 in one table.

What do the CMS star ratings mean?

“Nursing homes with 5 stars are considered to have much above average quality and nursing homes with 1 star are considered to have quality much below average.” (CMS) “There is one Overall 5-star rating for each nursing home, and separate ratings for health inspections, staffing and quality measures.” (CMS) How CMS builds each rating.

Are star ratings enough to choose a nursing home?

CMS says no rating can do that on its own: “No rating system can address all of the important considerations that go into a decision about which nursing home may be best for a particular person.” (CMS) “Consumers should therefore use the website together with other sources of information for the nursing homes (including a visit to the nursing home) and State or local organizations (such as local advocacy groups and the State Ombudsman program).” (CMS)

What does the CMS abuse icon mean?

CMS marks homes cited for abuse at certain levels. “Nursing homes that receive the abuse icon have their health inspection rating capped at a maximum of two stars.” (CMS Technical Users' Guide) In the CMS data released October 8, 2026, one Brooklyn home has the icon: Seagate Rehabilitation And Nursing Center.

Does Medicare pay for a nursing home stay?

For short-term skilled care after a qualifying hospital stay, Medicare Part A can. Medicare.gov: “Days 1–20: You pay $0 each day after you pay the $1,736 deductible.” (Medicare.gov) “Days 21–100: You pay $217 each day.” (Medicare.gov) “Days 101 and beyond: You pay all costs.” (Medicare.gov) Long-term custodial care is different: “Since most long-term care is non-medical, Medicare and most health insurance, including Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap), don’t pay for long-term care services, including care in a nursing home or in the community.” (Medicare.gov) Work out the 2026 Part A amounts for a stay.

Which home health agencies serve my Brooklyn ZIP code?

CMS publishes a file of the ZIP codes where each Medicare-certified home health agency has served patients. CMS: “This file contains information on the areas served by the home health agency. It is based on OASIS assessments submitted by the HHA during the data collection period. There is one record for each ZIP code in which there was at least one patient served by the home health agency.” (CMS home health data dictionary) 30 agencies appear for at least one Brooklyn ZIP. Look up your ZIP.

How old is the inspection information?

CMS shows each home's most recent standard inspection. “Nursing homes that participate in the Medicare and/or Medicaid programs have an onsite recertification (standard) “comprehensive” inspection annually on average.” (CMS Technical Users' Guide) In the current Brooklyn data, CMS flags nine homes whose most recent health inspection was more than two years ago. Each home's page gives its inspection dates.
